Since the establishment of our school, drama has been incorporated into the educational mythology of our teaching system. Since the establishment in 1991 to 2006, the school play was staged by the English Drama Club. From 2006, the music department also merged and the club changed its name and continued their work as the English Musical Drama Club. Many different disciplines that have their own club such as music, dance, english drama, information technology and stage design are brought together with a system that combines the students diverse work. As a result, it is intended that each year a different stage performance is exhibited. Generally children are aquainted with the storyline as Disney Classics that have already been performed on Broadway are selected. In this way, students that are aged between 7-13 show intense interest in the fairy tales.

At Istanbul College the musical is categorized as an extra curricular activity and is taken very seriously. Just like the Broadway productions, there are cast selections and constant rehearsals as children are encouraged to memorize their lines and work on their facial expressions, hand gestures and movement. We believe practice makes perfect. Below is a chronological timeline and short description of the musicals the students at Istanbul College have exhibited.

 
2006 AIDA

Aida is the first musical that was staged and it was a rock opera. Elton Johns music and Tim Rice’s lyrics were used.
 

2007 Lion King

The Lion King musical was performed in 2007 and is an adaptation from the famous cartoon film. Starting from the scenario to the way it elicits important messages, this musical also grabbed the audiences attention with its wild dances and unique music.
  
2008 Cats

The CATS musical was the first ever to be performed by such a young age group in Turkey. There was imense interest in this musical and the students at Istanbul College enacted the play with success. The audience left with nothing but joy and a good time.

 
2009 Little Mermaid

This musical which is a fairytale about a young mermaid was again performed by the students in Istanbul College for the very first time in Turkey. The costume and stage decor were attention grabbing factors and the students did such a wonderful job that they were reminiscent of a professional team of cast. In the same year at about the same time the musical was staged, the students that had entered the First Lego League were picked as the winners in Turkey and got the chance to travel to Denmark which is also the homeland of the Little Mermaid. This was an extraordinary experience and a striking coincedence.

 
2010 Aladdin

The story of Aladdin and his adventures turned into a magical musical show when it was staged on Broadway. As a result, the fifth musical selected to be performed by the students at Istanbul College was the Aladdin musical.

 
2011 Beauty and the Beast

Behind the story of the Beauty and the Beast lies messages about lifes lessons and of course a spectacular love story. The students were very successful in portraying this traditional fairytale on stage. An important feature that distinguishes this musical and sets them apart from the others is that students have a soundtrack CD in assocation with the Beauty and the Beast musical.
 

2012 Lion King

Five years later the Lion King musical was again performed by the students. Friends and family were present to both support and watch this incredible musical show. Due to this musical being staged twice by Istanbul College students, the musical team prepared a documentary film on the preparational stages of the ‘new’ Lion King that also included behind the scenes footage. Through experience, the degree of improvement in the costumes, decor, accessories, make up and dances is evident in the film. In other words, it had a complete makeover whilst still maintaing the fun of the original.
 

2013 Shrek

After 8 years of experience, we will be before an audience once again with one of the most outstanding musicals ever yet. The Shrek musical will be staged on the 11th of May and the spectators should be ready to get entertained and have a good old time.
